Titanic distress message stolen in raid on club

THIEVES have stolen a valuable historical artefact connected to the sinking of the Titanic.

The last distress telegram sent from the sinking Titanic to rescue ship Carpathia was among the items stolen when raiders struck at Moorthorpe Recreation club near Pontefract overnight on Monday May 13.

Club chiefs are offering a reward of up to £1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible and the recovery of the treasured items.

Landlady Jean Martin said: “They took the message from the Titanic as well as a picture of the ship. We’ve owned these for a long time and put them up in the recreation club when we took over because we wanted to make the place interesting for the customers. They are important pieces of history.”

Anyone with information about the theft should call the police on 101.
