Toothsome offer as jail's contents go up for sale

IT's an offer to set your teeth on edge as the contents of one of the least favourite rooms in a former prison goes up for sale.

Bids for a dental chair and equipment left behind when the Ministry of Justice vacated Northallerton’s former prison are now being taken.

A reserve price of £1,000 has been put on the chair on ebay, along with X-ray machine and spittoon by Hambleton Council, which advises would-be buyers that the contents have been used. There was just one bid last night.

The dentist’s room was part of the healthcare wing of the North Yorkshire jail which is due for demolition.

The prison, parts of which date from the 18th century, was closed in 2013.

The jail was bought by Hambleton Council for £1.4 million. There are plans to redevelop the site, although five listed buildings will be preserved.

“We understand the chair was re-upholstered shortly before the prison closed - and all the equipment has been newly installed,” said council leader Coun Mark Robson.

“It is all in excellent condition, so we were surprised it was left behind.

“It is certainly one of the most unusual items we have had to sell - but we hope it can go to a good home.”

The council said the buyer must dismantle and move the dental equipment themselves. They hope to get the lot sold within seven days.

Included in the contents is the Castellini area 4 examination chair, Satelec X Mind X-ray unit, and a range of other furniture.

It can be viewed by appointment.
