A MOVING candle-lit vigil was held in Leeds to remember the victims of the brutal Pakistan school attack.

The vigil outside the St John’s Centre was held in memory of the 134 pupils and nine teachers who lost their lives in the attack at a school in Pakistan last year.

The massacre took place after Taliban fighters stormed the Army Public School in Peshawar on December 16.

The remembrance event on Saturday, January 3 was organised by the South Asian Peoples Forum and the Pakistan Journalist Association and other organisations.

Last year, Lord Mayor of Leeds councillor David Congreve led a similar event, with a one-minute silence in front of the Leeds Art Gallery.

He was joined by fellow politicians, as well as multi-faith leaders and community representatives.

Coun Congreve said: “The silence was an opportunity for the people of Leeds to pay their respects to those families and communities touched by this terrible tragedy.”

The news comes as Pakistani air strikes killed 31 militants and a suspected US drone strike has killed a further seven, officials say, as local troops pressed on with a six-month offensive in tribal regions along the Afghan border that have long been insurgent havens.
