Tourist-trap Dungeon to re-open after £2m refit
A MAJOR tourist attraction in York will re-open today six months after it was swamped in one of the worst floods the city has witnessed.
The York Dungeon has undergone a £2m refit since it was damaged by the rising waters of the River Ouse in September. The river peaked at about 16.5ft above normal summer levels – the second highest since records began and only beaten by the flooding disaster in 2000.
The dungeon’s owners, Merlin Entertainments Group, have re-modelled the venue which now features infamous characters from York history, including Viking king Eric Bloodaxe, the highwayman Dick Turpin and Guy Fawkes. The attraction also features the story behind some of York’s landmarks including Clifford’s Tower and the haunted Golden Fleece pub.
