Tours add colour to nation's past

The shelves may not appear as bright as some, but for Susan Harrison of English Heritage, pictured, leading a tour of the agency's North Yorkshire archaeological stores in Helmsley yesterday provided visitors with a colourful glimpse into history.

They 800,000 artefacts are normally off-limits to the public. The store includes the largest collection of carved medieval stonework in Europe, and the hundreds of thousands of finds range from the prehistoric era to the 20th century.
