Town hall retains traditional look

The extension to Hebden Bridge’s Town Hall is to be built of Pennine stone.

Hebden Bridge Community Association has revealed the stone for the major new building will come from the Crosland Hill quarry near Huddersfield.

The stone, a millstone grit sandstone, has been deemed a good match for the stone used in 1897 and 1898 when the original town hall was built. Ashlar stone will be used for the town hall development.

Peter Hirst, chair of the community association, said: “We’re delighted that we will be able to use high-quality stone for the town hall development. The new building will be a landmark for many years to come and the town deserves the best we can afford.”

Crosland Hill stone has paved Paternoster Square next to St Paul’s Cathedral.

Hebden Bridge Community Association took over ownership and management of Hebden Bridge Town Hall from Calderdale Council on April 1 last year. It is now appealing for support to ensure that the new riverside courtyard can also be flagged using York stone. People are invited to “buy” a square metre of courtyard flagstone for £100.
