Town salutes role of armed forces

MILITary personnel currently serving abroad and veterans of previous conflicts will be honoured in Rotherham when the Armed Forces Day flag is hoisted above the town hall.

Celebrations of the contribution of servicemen and women will be held all over the country next week ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday June 25, and Rotherham dignitaries will play their part at 10.15am on Monday.

The event will be attended by Rotherham’s mayor Coun Shaun Wright and led by Coun Mahroof Hussain, cabinet member for community development.

The Territorial Army, the Royal British Legion, the Parachute Regiment, the Air Training Corps, the Royal Navy and SSAFA (the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) will also attend.

Coun Hussain said: “This event is Rotherham’s opportunity to recognise what people across Rotherham have done and continue to do through their service.

“Our Armed Forces have a proud tradition of attracting people of all colours, faiths and backgrounds, united together in serving their country, and this is very much part of the One Town, One Community vision for Rotherham, which promotes inclusion.”
