Traditional woodland crafts on show at new visitor centre

PUMPKIN carving, wand making and apple pressing were among the activities at the official opening of a new Woodland Discovery Centre within one of South Yorkshire’s biggest ancient woodlands yesterday.

The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun Sylvia Dunkley, officially opened Ecclesall Woods’ new timber visitors’ centre amid an action-packed family fun day.

Traditional crafts such as weaving, turning and rustic furniture-making were demonstrated, and visitors were given the chance to try their hand themselves.

Meanwhile, craftsmen were also selling items such as wooden bowls and turned objects.

Coun Dunkley said: “Ecclesall Woods is one of the most popular natural attractions in the region and the new Woodland Discovery Centre will help visitors understand and appreciate the woods even more.

“We are fortunate to live in such a green and beautiful city, with lots of wonderful parks and woodlands.”

The building includes new visitor, education and training facilities to cater for the 300,000 people who visit Ecclesall Woods every year.

Coun Leigh Bramall, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, added: “I am sure the Discovery Centre will become a valuable addition to enhance people’s enjoyment of the woods.

“Many people have already taken advantage of the excellent facilities here and I hope that several school groups will take advantage of the modern educational facilities.

“It’s a centre that everyone can enjoy, whatever your age.”
