Traffic chaos as 'collapsing' main road into Leeds closed indefinitely

DRIVERS in Leeds were today braced for traffic chaos after police were forced to shut one side of a main road that is at risk of collapse.

The A660 Otley Road at Headingley has been closed to motorists travelling north out of the city centre between St Michael's Lane and North Lane.

The road will remain closed for the foreseeable future, a Leeds City Council spokesman has confirmed.

The dramatic step was taken by West Yorkshire Police after a utility company's engineers uncovered a deep cavity running beneath Otley Road at its junction with Bennett Road.

Motorists are advised to find alternative routes. It is not known when the road will be reopened.
