Traffic improvements at World Heritage Site

Further work may be needed at a Yorkshire World Heritage site as part of a multi-million pound scheme to ease congestion and improve road safety through Saltaire.

A series of 20 mph zones and traffic calming schemes have already been carried out in Saltaire Village, Hirst Wood and Wycliffe as part of a £3.3m project.

Members of the Shipley Area Committee will meet next week to discuss highway work which forms part of the Saltaire Roundabout Improvement Project.

A report to be considered by the committee, which will meet at 6pm on Wednesday in Bingley Town Hall, says: “Follow up surveys are being carried out to assess the effectiveness; however further works may be necessary, particularly in the village. If needed, these will be subject to further design, consultation and orders may include measures at the Saltaire Road/Victoria Road junction.”

Work has started on 20mph zones in Nab Wood, Moorhead and Avondale which are part of the overall scheme.

The Bradford Council project involves a large programme of small highway improvements, some of which have been completed or have started already.

These include a major traffic calming scheme in Nab Wood on Moorhead Lane, Avondale Road, and Grosvenor Road to complement the schemes already carried out in Saltaire, Hirst Wood and Wycliffe.

Engineers hope that many of the issues concerning local people will be addressed when the work is complete.

Shipley Area Committee chairman Councillor David Heseltine said: “These proposals will be scrutinised in depth by the committee to see how far the problems of the area can be mitigated by carrying out low-cost interventions and minor works.”

The programme of works is estimated to be complete by the end of March next year.
