A1(M) closed in North Yorkshire due to bridge defect - long delays and diversions in place

The A1(M) has been shut in North Yorkshire due to a bridge defect.

UPDATED WEDNESDAY 4.30PM: National Highways said: “The bridge carrying the A1M southbound at junction 56 (Barton) was closed as a precautionary measure on Monday morning after some small segments of concrete were found to have come loose from the underside of the bridge deck. A National Highways structures inspector found some localised areas of delamination, which occurs when the top layer of the surface begins to separate from the underlying concrete. This can be caused by factors such as excess moisture or frost getting into the concrete.

“The inspection found the bridge and carriageway remained safe for everyone to use, with any further loose concrete removed from the deck, and the road was reopened at around 1pm.

“This bridge will continue to be closely monitored, with regular inspections in place and any repairs carried out in due course if they are deemed necessary for everyone’s safety.”
