Calls for 20mph speed limit to be introduced on Yorkshire road where tanker nearly crashed into a house

A father in an East Yorkshire village has called for 20mph speed limits outside his local primary school weeks after a tanker careened off the same stretch of road.

James Ashman said Holme upon Spalding Moor Primary School was one of the few in the East Riding without 20mph limits.

He added parents should drive to and from it and park more sensibly until lower speed limits or better traffic calming measures come in on the stretch of the A163.

An East Riding Council spokesperson said they could only put 20mph limits on certain roads and they were waiting on information about possible plans for blanket implementations in residential areas.

The call comes after a tanker crashed on the side of the A163 in Holme upon Spalding Moor in the early hours of Wednesday, November 9, almost hitting a home.

Howdenshire ward’s Cllr Victoria Aitken said on Facebook that she had been working with the school’s headteacher Steve Woodhouse on the issue.

She added that more information on plans for a blanket implementation of 20mph limts due in the next six months brought one for that stretch of road a step closer.

The councillor also called on drivers to slow down to 20mph when driving past the school regardless.

Mr Ashman told LDRS that although the tanker crash happened at the other end of the village, it showed how dangerous that stretch of road could be.

He said: “I and others in the village think the council has to try harder on this.

“As well as reducing the speed limit speed bumps and other traffic calming measures could also be put on it but because it’s an A road no one wants to do anything.

“The flashing lights on the pedestrian crossing outside the school are also not in use.

“There are multiple issues and there isn’t one answer to them.

“I’ve asked the headteacher that we’re trying to improve things and to tell people to be more sensible in the meantime.

“But so far it just seems like people are coming up with excuses as to why nothing’s been done.”

The council’s spokesperson said: “At present, there are restrictions on where a 20mph limit can be placed.

“However, we are aware that there is currently a discussion taking place at a national level around the blanket implementation of 20mph restrictions in residential areas.

“Scotland, Wales and Greater London have all recently passed, or plan to pass, legislation to reduce most residential 30mph roads to 20mph.

“Given that it is very time-consuming and expensive to implement a change in speed limit, and now that it is looking possible there may be a change in national policy in the foreseeable future, the council won’t be looking to introduce any new 20mph schemes until we have received updated guidance on this matter.”
