Firm to pay over £18,000 after worker loses arm

A recycling firm has been ordered to pay more than £18,000 after a man lost his arm in a horrifying works accident.

Ray Wright had his right forearm severed in a baling machine at the Transwaste Recycling site at Hessle Dock, Hull, in April 2009. Beverley Magistrates were told the original protective guard to the baling machine had been damaged and replaced with a makeshift one.

The 34-year-old was injured after he tripped and put his arm out to break his fall. His arm entered the baling chamber and was severed between the wrist and elbow. Surgery was unsuccessful and he now has a prosthetic limb.

The Health and Safety Executive told magistrates Mr Wright had struggled to get help and he had to run out and hail a van driver, lifting his severed limb to signal his desperate need for help. Moments later, he passed out and an ambulance was called.

He has since returned to work for the firm. Melton-based Transwaste Recycling and Aggregates Ltd was fined £12,000 and ordered to pay £6,408 costs after admitting a breach of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.
