Girfriend backs safety campaign

Jason Norfolk was enjoying a lads night out before leaving Rumours bar on North Church Side on his own in the early hours of Sunday. His phone was found later that evening on the mud banks outside Trinity Wharf.

Just a year ago railings were put up along a stretch on the east side of the river near Drypool Bridge where Stuart Gilson, 21, is thought to have fallen into the river. The spot is now marked by a plaque which reads: “I give these railings to one and all and I hope that, if in danger, they stop your fall.”

Faye Longley, Mr Norfolk’s girlfriend, said railings could make a “split second” difference between safety and tragedy.

She said: “The walkways down the River Hull, especially in the Old Town, there are 20ft worth of railings near Drypool Bridge and 20ft near Scale Lane Bridge and that’s it.

“In terms of safety, it’s not well lit, there’s hardly any CCTV.

“If you are going to have people who have had a drink and are not in full control, all it takes is a strong wind, which Saturday night was. It was that horrible storm.

“All it takes is for you to be knocked off your balance for that split second. If there were barriers you would bounce off them -this is why I am backing the campaign.”

Mr Norfolk, who works for caravan firm Swift Group, was caught on CCTV walking along Liberty Lane in the direction of High Street at 1.16am on Sunday. Anyone who saw Jason after that time should call police on 101.
