M18 closed after man is killed in pile-up

MOTORISTS were warned to avoid the M18 near Doncaster today after a man was killed in an accident at just after 7am.

South Yorkshire Police said the southbound carriageway would remain closed as emergency services were dealt with the aftermath of the crash near junction 3.

A police spokesman said: “It is believed that a man, thought to be in his 50s, got out of his vehicle after he was involved in a collision.

“He was hit by another vehicle or vehicles travelling in an adjoining lane, sustaining fatal injuries. A number of other vehicles have then collided as a result.

“The M18 southbound remains closed between junction 4 and junction 2. Other surrounding roads have reopened but are heavily congested.

“Officers dealing with the collision urge motorists to find an alternative route. It is expected that the carriageway will be closed for several hours.”
