Police want to trace a potential witness to a crash which left two schoolboys dead.

George Wharton, 14, of Nineveh Gardens, Holbeck, and 13-year-old Rhys Baker, of Harwill Rise, Churwell, were fatally injured when the blue Peugeot 206 they were passengers in hit a tree on the A62 Gelderd Road, in Morley, on March 7.

Another passenger, 14-year-old Kameron Walters, and the 22-year-old driver, Tom McMeekin, suffered what police say are “significant life-changing injuries”. Both remain in hospital.

A fourth boy, 16-year-old Joshua Van Veen, has been released from hospital.

Investigators are still trying to identify the driver of a silver, Transit-sized van which turned off Gelderd Road onto Harthill Parade before the collision occurred.

Sergeant Carl Quinn, of West Yorkshire’s Police major collision enquiry team, said: “We have conducted extensive enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision and have spoken to a number of witnesses. We have so far been unable to trace the driver of this vehicle as a potential witness.

“We believe this vehicle may have been overtaken by the blue Peugeot motor car on Gelderd Road shortly prior to the collision taking place. We would ask that the occupants of the vehicle contact us.”

Anyone with information should contact MCET via 101.
