A cave rescue team was sent out to locate the wreckage and the pilot and passenger were rescued.

Chief Inspector Simon Lovell said they were taken to hospital with minor injuries. It is believed they sustained a broken nose and a broken ankle.

He said the plane took off from Blackpool earlier in the evening and had been flying north, towards the Kirkby Lonsdale area, via Clitheroe.

Mr Lovell added: “The Civil Aviation Authority and Air Crash Investigation have been informed.”
