UPDATED: Arson attack at Sheffield children's centre

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a children's centre in Sheffield was badly damaged in an arson attack.

Bizzy Bees Playgroup in School Road, Beighton, was badly damaged in the blaze, which broke out at around 6pm on Sunday.

Five fire engines and an aerial appliance were sent to deal with the incident at the building, which was well-alight with flames shooting through the roof.

Firefighters managed to put a fire break in place, which helped to save three-quarters of the building.

Fire crews spent around four hours dealing with the blaze. An investigation into the cause is underway.

School Road was cordoned off while the fire was dealt with by the emergency services and no one was injured in the incident.

Inquiries into the investigation are ongoing and officers are treating the fire as suspicious.

Inspector Jason Booth of Sheffield Police, said: “The fire has caused significant damage to the children’s facility but I would like to reassure residents that we are pursuing various lines of enquiry to identify those responsible.

“I would encourage anyone who has any information or who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the incident to get in touch with the police.”
