At its height 70 firefighters tackled the fire, which could be seen for miles around, after they were called to the Cuckoo Nest Industrial Estate in Norcroft Street, Listerhills, just before 11.30am yesterday. The fire was contained within a repair garage which housed more than 12 vehicles and some gas cylinders.

District Commander for Bradford Martin Speed said: “The fire was discovered by mechanics working within the garage who then raised the alarm. Before the fire service’s arrival they attempted to put the fire out using handheld extinguishers but were unable to do so. Fortunately no-one was hurt. On our arrival workers were also attempting to remove vehicles away from the site, however, a handful of cars have been destroyed by fire.”

The fire severely damaged the roof of the garage but crews managed to stop it from spreading to adjoining properties.

Around 30 people from neighbouring business premises were evacuated and Thornton Road and Listerhills Road were closed.

Crews spent two hours getting the blaze under control.

A witness said: “It spread so fast and there was black smoke everywhere. People were trying to move cars out of there quickly.
