I WRITE in response to your editorial “A national priority” (The Yorkshire Post, August 27) regarding the dualling of the A64 Scarborough to York road.

For the residents of Scarborough, where the parking system for residents is already dire, the main road leading into the town (Seamer Road) is already gridlocked at peak time already with mostly local
traffic.

Before the A64 is dualled, there needs to be a major and drastic re-think by Scarborough Borough Council on how to deal with what would inevitably be a far greater number of vehicles arriving and seeking parking in the town.

Scarborough in reality is a “cul de sac” like all other coastal towns. We are lucky however to have space outside the town in the Seamer/Staxton locality where we also have a rail network running almost parallel to the A64 road. Perhaps, with some creative thinking, the council should consider working alongside Network Rail and give consideration to space set aside out of town and develop a small tram-like rail service running into the town’s railway station.

This would have an additional benefit of bring people through the town centre to get to the tourist attraction, whether they be in the North Bay or South Bay.
