Traveller life in words and pictures

AN exhibition exploring the life of a traveller is being shown at Hull’s Central Library from today.

Photographer Matt Stephenson and writer Dave Windass, supported by Hull Council’s traveller education team, have worked with young people from the city’s gypsy and traveller community to create an exhibition called “To be able to pull up and sit and have a chat around the fire”. It explores through pictures and interviews their lives and culture, looking at traditions, family bonds, the old, the young and the future.

Mr Windass said: “Over a number of days I was fortunate enough to visit several sites and be invited in to the homes of several travellers. As obvious as it sounds, during the short interviews we just did what we could to let people talk. And talk they did.

“This is a community in transition with a lot to say and I feel privileged that they not only let me into their homes but also, albeit for a short space of time, their lives.”

The exhibition is part of a two-year programme of arts activities and events which aims to engage young people in the arts and galleries.
