Tribute to 'fun-loving' student in rock death

The family of a British student who died in the Swiss Alps aftersmashing into a rock face on a zip wire described her as a "fun-loving young woman" who "lived life to the full".

Andrea Watton, from Fordingbridge, Hampshire, was with six other sport science students from Bangor University on a trip to Saas-Fee who were making their way across the Gorge Alpine via ferrata route on Sunday, crossing gorges on zip wires, bridges, steps, steel cables and ladders.

When the 21-year-old reached the third zip wire she decided not to use special equipment designed for the activity, local police said, and fixed only two hooks to the cable and launched herself across. But she was unable to brake and was killed on impact with a rock face.

Her family said: "Andrea was a beautiful, fun-loving and adventurous young woman.

"She will always be in our hearts and memories. She loved outdoor pursuits and planned to make a career out of this.

Swiss police said her family travelled to the country when they heard the news of her death. The rest of the students in her group, meanwhile, returned to Britain.
