True honour for Fiery Fred

The legacy of Fred Trueman is assured at Headingley where a new enclosure has been named after the legendary player, Yorkshire and England's greatest fast bowler.

The Trueman Enclosure, situated in the new Carnegie Pavilion, was officially opened before the third day's play of Yorkshire's County Championship match against Kent.

His widow, Veronica, pictured alongside his son, Rodney, performed the honours at the opening ceremony.

The enclosure is located on the site of the old Wintershed where "Fiery" Fred, inset right who died in 2006 at the age of 75, used to practise his bowling in the indoor nets.

Mrs Trueman said: "I am delighted that the club has taken this step to remember Fred and give him a lasting legacy.

"He would have been deeply moved and honoured. I hope it will inspire the young Yorkshire fast bowlers of the future to run down the hill from the Trueman Enclosure and take lots of wickets." Picture: Tony Johnson
