Tunnel vision knocks walkers off track

WALKERS and cyclists who use a popular Peak District trail have been warned that part of the route will be closed for about six weeks as part of a project to reopen four disused railway tunnels.

The Monsal Trail follows the path of the old Midland Railway, which closed in 1968, and the work is part of the 2.25m Pedal Peak District project.

From Monday next week until mid-March, a section of the trail, from Upperdale to Monsal Head, above, will be closed.

Project manager Rhonda Pursglove said: "It is an amazing experience to go through the tunnels and see the fantastic views as you come out. We are looking forward to completing the work so that cyclists, walkers and horse riders can experience that feeling for the first time since the tunnels closed in 1968."
