Turning over a new leaf

Chris Helliwell is one of the region's leading wood turners – or bodgers after making an usual career switch by opting out of his role as a Church of England vicar to work wood this way.

Now based at Barton, near Richmond, he makes rustic bowls and furniture and will be demonstrating the craft at the Guisborough Forest Festival on Sunday.

The festival – the North’s biggest woodland jamboree – will see more than 100 exhibitors and participants showcasing ancient skills, as well as theatre, fun and music for all ages at the 900-acre beauty spot.
