TV presenter backs wildlife awards

THE Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is hoping to nurture the next generation of naturalists with new awards.

Wildlife Watch awards will be given to children who take part in challenges such as making a mini nature reserve, marking and recapturing garden snails and helping birds avoid flying into windows.

Once online and outdoor activities are completed, the entrants will be receive badges, loyalty cards and certificates.

TV naturalist and Wildlife Trust vice president Chris Packham said: “Enjoying nature at a young age and coming to value it really can bring a lifetime of pleasure.

“But as most good naturalists are hooked by the time they are nine, I hope these awards help to put the sparkle that sees the beauty of life in many a young heart,” he added.

Children who gain the hedgehog and kestrel awards can progress to the nature ranger award, which gives each winner a certificate signed by Chris Packham, a website profile icon and a mention in Wildlife Watch magazine.

Further details of the initiative are due to be published on the York-based organisation’s website – www.ywt.org.uk – soon.
