Twins, 66, walk 300 miles for charity

IDENTICAL twin sisters have completed a gruelling, month-long walk for charity.

The 66-year-old grandmothers, Christine Dafter and Hazel Green, set off on May 1 from Peacehaven in East Sussex, and followed the Greenwich Meridian Line for 300 miles until it reaches the sea, arriving Sand le Mere, near Withernsea in the East Riding, yesterday afternoon.

It is thought to be the first time a charity walk has been made along the newly created trekking route.

The sisters were joined by other twins for parts of the route and were helped along some challenging stretches, including a motor launch across the River Humber courtesy of the Humber Mouth Yacht Club.

Mrs Dafter said: “It’s not been too difficult because it’s been brilliant weather but yes, it’s been a challenge. We can’t believe we’ve done it but we do feel fortunate to be healthy enough to do it.”

The sisters are hoping to raise £10,000 for research into chronic diseases. The money will go via the Chronic Disease Research Foundation to the Department of Twin Research, part of King’s College London and based at St Thomas’s Hospital, London.
