Two arrests over murder of Sheffield lawyer

Richard Wheeler, aged 73 and his wife Grace, 67, were hacked to death in their Caribbean home in an apparent robbery.

Mr Wheeler, a former Sheffield lawyer, was killed alongside his wife in Trinidad and Tobago last week.

Police said Mrs Wheeler was found slumped on the lawn outside the couple’s home with a cut to her neck, while her husband was found inside with wounds to his arms and the back of his head.

Their home had been ransacked.

Two men arrested over the deaths are both construction workers, it is reported.

Mr Wheeler was a partner in the Tobago office of Lex Caribbean law firm, and also a member of the Tobago Chamber of Commerce.

His wife, who was local, worked for a real estate agency.

The couple had lived in the village of Carnbee, Tobago, for 16 years.

Diane Hadad, chairman of the Tobago Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce, said Mr Wheeler was a gentleman’ and described the double murder as a tragedy’.

Ms Hadad said Mr and Mrs Wheeler were friendly, always smiling, always laughing’, adding: “They led a simple life, a friendly life. They were not people who caused trouble.”

She said Mr Wheeler was “a professional” at work “who always looked at both sides of an argument”.

She added: “We are hoping the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
