A couple, believed to be in their mid-20s, are thought to have rented the home about six weeks ago.

Neighbours said the pair, who had a toddler, had kept themselves to themselves since moving in.

Graham Harrison, a 54-year-old electrician, who lives next door, said: "The police came round and said they were investigating the death of a child. I've only seen the couple once - it's a rented property to a private landlord.

"There are no curtains in the house or anything up in the windows, which I always thought was strange."

Joiner Michael Ross, 26, who lives a few doors down from the property, said: "The couple had a two or three year-old boy, but we haven't seen them for weeks and we thought they had gone."

The identities of the dead child and the two people arrested have not yet been released.

A police spokesman said: "Two people are in police custody in connection with the incident."
