Two killed as icy roads cause chaos in region

TWO people were killed and several others injured as icy roads caused traffic chaos across East Yorkshire.

A 62-year-old Driffield woman – one of six people travelling in a VW Bora car – died on Tuesday night in a crash with a lorry on the B1248 north of Fimber roundabout in East Yorkshire.

A boy aged six suffered serious leg injuries and the other occupants of the car suffered minor injuries. The lorry driver, a man aged 40 from North Yorkshire, was arrested and bailed.

Yesterday a 45-year-old man from Staffordshire died when the Mercedes Vito van he was in collided with a lorry near junction 38, North Cave, on the eastbound carriageway of the M62 at 6.25am.

The crash, which closed both carriageways, added two hours to journey times and caused tailbacks as far as Goole throughout the day.

Two firefighters responding to the incident in a fire engine from Howden needed hospital treatment for minor injuries after it crashed on the way to the scene.

An accident involving a lorry forced the temporary closure of a southbound lane on the Humber Bridge yesterday and two drivers were hurt in a crash on the A180 near Greatcoates in North East Lincolnshire.

A 73-year-old cyclist from Market Weighton suffered serious head injuries in a collision with a car at Shiptonthorpe roundabout on Tuesday morning.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Phil Leake said it would be freezing again this morning and asked motorists to drive sensibly.
