Abuse threats ‘marked’

More than 400 serial offenders of domestic abuse have been identified by police.

Public Protection Officers from the Kent force have put a marker against 389 men and 36 women who have abused two unrelated partners or more. Their names are on a crime record database linked to the Police National Computer.

The marker lets officers know that the offender has already come to the attention of police in relation to domestic abuse, making it easier to intervene earlier.

About a fifth of all violent crime in Kent is related to domestic abuse and police deal with 60 incidents a day.

Detective Superintendent Maria Shepherd, head of the Public Protection Unit, said: “Our ultimate aim is to reduce the amount of domestic abuse in our community.”
