All creatures great and small

Staff at London Zoo have embarked on the challenge of their annual audit, to record details of the 16,000 animals in their care and this penguin was among those at the start of the weigh-in.

The full task is expected to take several days and will involve some species that are not so easy to handle, including big cats.

The work has a purpose, however, because the details will form part of an international record on information on endangered species which can be used to help guide action to protect those particular breeds in the future.

It also helps zookeepers to monitor the well-being of the animals in their care.
