Charity takes Government to court over cuts

A CHARITY which provides support and safe accommodation for women trafficked into prostitution has launched a High Court action over what it says will be at least a 40 per cent reduction in its budget.

The Poppy Project says the case against the Government is being brought on behalf of two anonymous victims, on the basis its help would be limited to a maximum of 30 days, where 90 would ideally be the minimum.

Poppy Project’s Abigail Stepnitz said; “Not only is that what is considered best practice by the Council of Europe, but that is what many other European governments have implemented.”

A Ministry of Justice spokesman denied changes to state funding to tackle trafficking would leave it unable to meet its international obligations.
