Cosmetic surgeons who used faulty implants ‘should pay for NHS ops’

COSMETIC surgeons who used sub-standard breast implants to maximise their profits should cover the costs of NHS operations to remove them, Rotherham MP Denis MacShane said yesterday.

The former Europe minister called on Prime Minister David Cameron to put female Cabinet members in charge of finding solutions in this country, where it is believed around 40,000 women had faulty silicone implants made by French company Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP).

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley ordered an urgent review over the weekend after receiving evidence that more than 3,000 UK women could face complications.

Mr MacShane said: “This is about greed pure and simple. PIP implants have been banned in the USA since 2000 but because they were cheaper than other implants profit hungry cosmetic surgeons continued to import them for use in Britain.

“Andrew Lansley has been asleep on this scandal all during the holidays. While his opposite number in France has moved swiftly and decisively to reassure frightened French women and offered immediate free remedial surgery, Lansley has said and done as little as possible.”

Mr MacShane also called for a full inquiry into the scandal.
