Duchess plants tree for wedding

The Duchess of Cornwall has planted a “wedding cake tree” to commemorate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

As the Duchess met members of her local Women’s Institute to plant the tree in the grounds of St Mary’s Church, in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, there was only one subject on everybody’s lips – the Royal wedding.

One lady presented Camilla with a basket of flowers and the conversation quickly turned to the wedding.

The Duchess told her: “It was absolutely wonderful, very, very special.”

After planting the tree in the churchyard, the Duchess said: “I hope that this tree will remind everybody in Tetbury of a wonderful and special day.

“I am thrilled to be able to plant it.”

The Cornus contraversa, which is nicknamed “wedding cake” because of its horizontal, tiered branches and star-shaped white flowers in the summer, has taken pride of place in the grounds of the church.

The tree was donated by members of the Tetbury Evening Women’s Institute and Tetbury in Bloom will help maintain it over the coming years.
