Inquest verdict on soldiers

Two soldiers died when their armoured vehicle was blown up as they returned to their base in the dark, an inquest heard.

Major Matthew Collins, 38, and Lance Sergeant Mark Burgan, 28, were in the front of a Jackal when it was caught by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan on March 23 this year.

The inquest in Trowbridge, Wiltshire heard the men were due to leave Afghanistan six days later.

Coroner David Ridley recorded a verdict that both soldiers were unlawfully killed while on active service in Afghanistan.

Maj Collins, from Backwell, Somerset, left a wife, Lucy, and two children. L/Sgt Burgan, from Kirkby, Merseyside, left a wife Leanne.
