The 64-year-old was also landed with a £1,000 legal bill after caught by a police camera van at an accident blackspot in the Yorkshire Dales.

He was doing 70mph in a 50mph zone on a Monday afternoon in his £18k Mercedes Benz Vito van with personal plate.

The former England manager was shown the red card by road safety campaigners for losing his licence twice in six years.

Keegan, from Hale, Altrincham, Cheshire, appeared before JPs in Northallerton on October 7 but managed to avoid publicity at the time.

He admitted speeding on the A59, outside Hazlewood, near Skipton, North Yorks, on May 18 this year.

He was disqualified from driving for six months under the totting up procedure and fined £750, plus a £150 court charge, £85 costs, and a victim surcharge of £20.

Keegan was banned from driving for six months in February 2009 after he was caught speeding by a laser device on the A69 near Carlisle.

He had reached the maximum 12 penalty points when he was clocked at 36mph in a 30mph zone on August 27 that year, a week before he quit as Newcastle Manager.

Sarah-Jane Martin, for Brake, the road safety charity, said of the latest conviction: “Keegan clearly hasn’t learnt any lessons.

“It is grossly irresponsible for a public figure to show such disregard for safe driving. “It’s an insult to the many families who have been bereaved because of criminal drivers.

“The points system is there to protect other road users and shouldn’t be abused by celebrities who think they’re above the law.”

The limit on that stretch of the A59, a three lane carriageway near a notorious blackspot called Beamsley Hill, was lowered to 50mph in 2007 by highway chiefs.

It had been branded the most dangerous road in Britain by the AA.

Radar signs which display “Slow Down” messages when they detect speeders were also installed following a spate of road deaths and years of campaigning by residents.

North Yorkshire Police said Keegan had been recorded by police safety camera van doing 70mph in a 50mph zone at 1.30pm.
