Link road set to help create up to 4,000 jobs in region

A new connection between commercial land at Capitol Park in Goole to the M62 could be in use in 16 months, after the 
Government’s Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) appointed contractors to carry out the scheme.

The one-kilometre road between the industrial park and junction 36, just north of Goole docks, will open up 40 hectares of land for development.

It is part of a £13m investment in Capitol Park which is hoped will create around 4,000 jobs for the Humber area. Just over £8m of funding for the work will come from the European Regional Development Fund.

Andrew Percy, MP for Brigg and Goole, said: “It has been a long and complicated process but it is great news for Goole and for job creation in the town.

“I am pleased that through the HCA the Government has recognised the importance of this scheme for the local area.”

Other infrastructure work to create better connectivity between Goole’s port and Capitol Park, currently home to a Tesco distribution centre, Guardian Glass and Drax Power, is to be carried out as part of the project.

Backers say the construction of an extra 116,000 square metres of employment floorspace and create a direct connection between Capitol Park and the docks to complement the existing links to the motorway network.

Coun Stephen Parnaby, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, hailed the news as the “final piece in the jigsaw” for Goole’s regeneration.

“This is a landmark moment for Goole and one which this council has strived for alongside our partners at the HCA,” he said.

“Job creation is one of this council’s top priorities and the building of transport infrastructure, like the new access road, helps an area fulfil its potential and is often a major factor in securing investment from businesses. This road will open up a large area of the town for potential development, helping to regenerate Goole for the benefit of its residents.”

The £273m Capitol Park was known as Centrepoint before property developer Sterling Capitol bought out business partners in 2007. The re-branding brought it in line with Capitol Park, Leeds, and Capitol Park, Barnsley.
