PoW’s sketches put up for sale

A wartime sketchbook of scenes in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, drawn by a prisoner himself, is to go under the hammer.

The sketches by John Picken, a lance corporal in the Royal Mechanical Engineers, who was a prisoner in the Fukuoka camp in Java, are being sold by his son, who found them in a garage after his father’s death.

The items, which give an insight into the harrowing experiences of PoWs, will be sold at auction in Lincoln later this month.
