Royal wedding gown competes to be crowned 2012’s top design

The dress, designed by Sarah Burton, is an intricately-decorated gown that bears a striking resemblance to the one worn by the actress Grace Kelly for her wedding to Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, in April 1956.

It went on display in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace during the annual summer opening last year.

The Olympic torch, which has been designed by east London duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, has been compared to a cheese grater or an ice cream cone.

They both feature in the Design Museum’s annual awards alongside the Olympic velodrome in east London and the comedy carpet in Blackpool – an artwork at the foot of Blackpool Tower featuring jokes and catchphrases of more than 1,000 comedians.

The longlisted designs are in seven different categories including architecture, fashion, furniture and transport.

They will go on show at an exhibition at the museum, in Shad Thames, south London, from February 8.

The overall winner for Design of the Year will be announced at a ceremony at the museum on April 24.
