Tories top list for political donations

The Conservatives received almost £1m more in donations than Labour during the second quarter of this year.

Data from the Electoral Commission showed the Tories accepted donations of £4,201,600, while Labour received £3,222,954 and the Liberal Democrats were given £972,344.

Seven political parties registered in the UK reported donations totalling £8,673,895, excluding public funds, including Ukip which received £66,552.

Unite the Union topped the list of the period’s top 10 donors, giving £765,628 to Labour, while the National Conservative Draws Society gave £400,000 to the Tories.

Labour received £385,263 from Unison, £368,948 from the GMB, £305,244 from Usdaw and £130,472 from the CWU.

Focus on Scotland gave £265,000 to the Conservatives, while Rainham Steel Co Ltd gave them £107,000.

The Lib Dems received £250,000 from Brompton Capital Ltd and £200,000 from C & C Alpha Group.
