Tottenham MP fears more riots

The MP for the London constituency where rioting triggered a wave of disorder which spread across England this summer fears a repeat of the violence.

David Lammy, who has represented Tottenham in parliament since 2000, said that the deep-seated social and economic problems facing inner-city areas could get worse in 2012. He called for a renewed effort to help disaffected youths. The Higher Education Minister, who grew up in Tottenham, told the Independent: “We need politicians of all political parties to attend to these issues or it could happen again.”

The MP said joblessness, poverty and poor housing coupled with a lack of male role models, weakening community links and greed had “toxic” results in Tottenham in August.
