Young ‘lack Government support’

Almost three in four young people believe the Government is not doing enough to help them into work, research suggests.

A study by the Jack Petchey Foundation reveals many youngsters believe they will have to work harder for success, and are not receiving enough support.

The findings, based on a poll of of more than 5,000 11 to 25-year-olds, show that 72 per cent do not think the Government is doing enough to help them into employment.

Two-fifths (40 per cent) think businesses should be encouraged to offer internships, and more than a third (36 per cent) want to see more apprenticeships.

While two-fifths (40 per cent) of those questioned said their hopes and ambitions for the future had not changed in the past year, they did think they would have to work harder to give themselves the best chance of success.

The Listen Up! 2011 report found that more than half (51 per cent) of young people wanted to continue education to degree level and 78 per cent thought the Government should make going to university more affordable.
