UK team save girl trapped in rubble

THE smile of a two-year-old boy reunited with his mother after being pulled from the rubble offered a ray of hope to rescue workers and relatives in Haiti as the desperate search for survivors continued.

For two days after the devastating earthquake, Redjeson Hausteen Claude's fading cries for help could be heard from beneath the wreckage of his collapsed home in Port-au-Prince as his parents tried to reach him, digging through the rubble with their bare hands.

Specialist rescue teams from Spain and Belgium were able to pull the child to safety before a human chain passed him to his parents.

British firefighters rescued a two-year-old girl from a collapsed building in the Haitian capital, the Department for International Development said last night. The young girl was trapped under piles of rubble and was rescued on the first full day of deployment for the 64-strong team.

Mike Thomas, chief officer of the fire and rescue team, said: "This is a real boost to us all. This is what we do the job for."

At least 55 people have been rescued in Port-au-Prince.

Britons last night had already donated more than 2m to help the earthquake-stricken country in the space of just 36 hours.
