Unbeaten boxer adept at swaying judges after exhibiting good skills in defence

BY day he is a budding Leeds lawyer but by night China Clarke has swapped the courtroom for the boxing ring.

The fighter, from Meanwood, Leeds, who is unbeaten in seven professional bouts, is preparing to put his undefeated record on the line on Saturday.

It’s an unorthodox preparation for a big fight – splitting his time between the city centre legal practice of Metis Law, where he is learning the ropes to become a commercial solicitor, and pounding the punchbags at a gym in Burmantofts, Leeds.

But Mr Clarke, who is determined to make boxing more accessible to people from all walks of life and careers, said: “There are many parallels between preparing for a big court case and readying for a big fight.

“In boxing, I look for angles in which to deliver the decisive blow, and push forward methodically to achieve victory – and it’s very much the same approach with law.”

Mr Clarke, who is also a model in his spare time, added. “We slip and move through the law looking for openings.

“And while both arenas demand sticking to a clear game plan, becoming used to rolling with the punches is a great skill to employ.”

Mr Clarke, who is hoping to specialise ultimately in sports law, is being mentored outside of the ring by Rajat Sharma, founding partner of Metis Law who offers support as part of Mr Clarke’s ringside team.

Mr Sharma said: “He breaks away from the usual stereotype of boxers as well as the conventional perception of lawyers.

“His is a refreshing story that will hopefully act as an inspiration to others wanting to enter the worlds of boxing or law.”

Mr Clarke, 32, is a 6ft 4in cruiserweight, and he fights John Anthony at the Leeds United Banqueting Suite this weekend in a long-awaited rematch – their last bout ended in a draw.

Tickets for Saturday’s bout are still available by calling 07866 775560.
