UPDATE: Man on a roof on Franklin Street, Scarborough; police negotiator at the scene

A police negotiator has been called and a road shut because of a man on a roof in Scarborough this morning.

Police including a specialist negotiator are understood to have been called to help the man on Franklin Street shortly after 5.30am.

Franklin Street was cordoned off and there are several police vehicles around Colmbus Ravine and Murchison Street.

A woman who lives nearby - who did not wish to be named - said she was woken at 5.30am by a man shouting and saw a man on a rooftop.

"He was on the rooftop," she said.

"There is an ambulance, a few police cars, plenty of police, riot shields and armed police there."

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "Police are currently at the scene of an ongoing incident on Franklin Street in Scarborough.

"A cordon is in place to allow emergency services, including a police negotiator, to respond.

"Please avoid the area until further notice.
