Urgent repairs planned on slipway at city boatyard

Urgent repairs to the Lendal boatyard in York are to be carried out next week.

The slipway, which boats use to gain access into the River Ouse, has been damaged over the years by water erosion, leading to parts of it collapsing.

This means that the current tenant, Yorkboat, is unable to use the slipway to remove boats for maintenance and statutory inspection.

As the landowner, York Council will carry out the repairs, which will take approximately four weeks and during this period a large temporary coffer dam will be installed to allow safe working on the riverbed.

River traffic will be partially restricted, but pedestrian access from Lendal Hill to Dame Judi Dench Walk will be maintained.

The 160,000 scheme has approval from British Waterways and the Environment Agency. A spokeswoman for the agency said the work would be monitored throughout.
