Vandal-hit pub eyes makeover as health spa
The Oak Vaults pub in Scott Street, Hull, is applying for change of use, after its owner blocked up some windows and replaced timber with plastic, without planning permission.
In a submission to Hull Council, the owner said the building – locally listed as a “good example of a traditional corner pub” with a “pleasing ground floor of stone and brick” – had to be secured after “numerous years of neglect”.

Hide AdIt fell prey to scrap metal thieves over last winter, who made off with piping, letting gas and water escape. The lead was stripped off the roof in March and safety barriers had to be put up to protect passers-by from falling objects.
A design statement says: “With seven points of entry doors (sic) and several window entry points the property was not able to be secured well and the risk of arson was clearly the next issue. To comply with health and safety of the public and insurance requirements we needed to take action to secure the property.”
It claims the changes will help bring back to life a “well-loved” part of the community.
