Veterans urge young people to light a candle a century on from war

Royal British Legion members will turn off lights and light a candle at 10pm on August 4, a century after the war’s outbreak.

David Marshall, Leeds group chairman of the British Legion and an ex-national serviceman, said: “It’s important for the Legion to pass the message to younger generations so they also understand the sacrifices that were made.”

Marks & Spencer is selling £4 commemorative Lights Out candles.

Robert Swannell, chairman of Marks & Spencer, said: “The extraordinary work The Royal British Legion does to support serving and ex-servicemen, women and their families is really important to M&S’s employees and customers. We are very proud to be participating in this national moment of commemoration.

“Lighting a candle is a small but significant gesture to honour those who bravely served, and continue to serve, and we encourage our customers to take part. All the profit from the Lights Out candle will be used for the Legion’s grant initiative, which assists current and former service personnel and their families.”
