Viaduct project wins national award

A COMMUNITY project to enhance one of North Yorkshire's most prominent landmarks has been singled out for a major national award.

The 150,000 project to enhance the riverside viewing platform underneath Knaresborough's famous viaduct has been commended in the British Urban Regeneration Association's Waterways Renaissance awards.

The platform was completed by Renaissance Knaresborough, Harrogate Borough Council and Knaresborough Town Council, with funding from the regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

Coun Andrew Jones, cabinet member for resources at Harrogate Borough Council said: "It is great that this project has received such national recognition. The work has made a real difference and opened up new ways for visitors to enjoy one of Knaresborough's main assets."

"This project has involved many different people and groups and this award is both recognition and a thank you to everyone involved."

Gordon Renton, chair of Renaissance Knaresborough, said: "I am delighted for whole town. The scheme has proved popular with residents and hopefully this award will generate even more interest."
